Underfloor insulation

Timber floors over a crawl space lose heat downwards and feel cold underfoot. Insulating under the floor deals with both.

Insulation fitted under a timber floor

What it is

Underfloor insulation is batts or boards fitted between the floor joists from underneath, and held in place so they stay put.

It suits timber floors with a subfloor space. Concrete slabs are handled differently, at the design stage.

When it goes in

New build

On a new timber-floor home it goes in before the flooring is laid, or from below once the floor is down.

Building a new home

Existing home

Most homes with a crawl space can be insulated from below without lifting the floor, as long as there is enough room to get underneath.

Insulating your current home

How we install it

  1. Check access and clearance under the floor.

  2. Fit batts or boards snugly between the joists.

  3. Support them so they cannot sag or drop over time.
